I was fortunate to be invited to a dinner party at Thai This. At first I had reservations about driving all the way down to Dana Point from Santa Monica. Now reflecting upon it, I'm glad that I decided to go.

The restaurant has a comfortable "home" feel to it. The servers/workers added to that ambience by being very hospitable. Basically, they make you feel as if you're coming home for dinner or lunch.

The food was excellent. Too bad I didn't take a menu home with me because we had these appetizers that were so delicious and I can't remember their names. One was a boch choi wrap and the other one was like a beef kabob. Anyhow, I ordered their cashew nut chicken (aka Roadrunner) and it was good, but the lamb dish that my friend ordered was better. The yellow curry chicken was excellent also. However, I highly recommend getting the lamb dish. It was tendor and flavorful.

Oh, and before I forget, they serve wine as well. And they have an excellent collection of wine. If you're a wine person who likes Thai food, this is a MUST VISIT place.

After dinner, you should go for an after dinner drink at the bar (Yes, they have a bar...it's not big, but it's something). Anyway, the bartender (we refer to him as "Pops") is hilarious. He's a great comedic story-teller.

All in all, Thai This is "all this" and "all that" with several finger snaps.

I went to Poom the other day for lunch with a co-worker of mine. The restaurant is pretty small. It's one of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They have this enormous equarium with these wonderful tropical fish. I was just at awh by the fish swimming in the aquarium.

Now for their food, the lunch menu is pretty good and very inexpensive, about $6.00 and it comes with soup and salad. Unfortunately, you do get what you pay for. The food was pretty bland. The funny thing was, as we were leaving we saw a worker preparing a packaged ramen for his lunch. That pretty much tells you how good the food is there.

Anyway, if your money is running low and wants an alternative other than burgers, Poom is the place to be. However, if you want something tasteful and have a couple of dollars more to spend, head south on Lincoln Blvd because there's plenty of better Thai restuarants down the road.

Oh, one last thing, their service was bad. The server was hard to get a hold off. We had to get up to the counter to ask for more napkins and we had to walk over to the fridge to get our own condiments.

I went to Star of Siam today for lunch with a co-worker of mine. The place (meaning decor) looks old and the tables and chairs feel sticky. However, that didn't bother me as much becuase I'm all about getting a great deal for lunch.

Their lunch menu is pretty good and reasonable. I ordered the yellow curry chicken. The curry wasn't bad, but the chicken had a funny taste. My co-worker ordered a shrimp pad thai dish and it was ehhh...nothing to brag about.

Overall, my experience was just okay. Would I go back there again? Maybe, but not anytime soon.

I go to dine at Bangkok West every other week and sometimes more frequently. They are located just across the street from the Santa Monica Main Library. Their food and service are exceptional. Bangkok West's Thai decor is quite exquisite and calming, which makes the whole dinning experience even more wonderful.

They have a tasty, yet affordable, lunch menu on Mon to Fri from 11 AM to 3 PM. From the lunch menu, I recommend the Ginger Chicken & Wine Hot Wok, Emperor Chicken Cashew Nuts, Thai Kick Boxing Curry Yellow Curry, or Spicy Eggplant & Basil. All lunch menu items serve with a house salad, egg rolls, rice (white or brown) and iced tea. Again, you do get the best value for your (little) money.

Also, as an added bonus, occasionally you will run into celebrities there.

Happy dining and make sure you bring your camera...just in case.
